Marguerite Bornhauser

Mirage

- '“Retaining what does not exist, or what no longer exists, is a very old form of vertigo. In the early days of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot already marvelled at the possibility that a shadow — ‘the most ephemeral thing there is’ — could be ‘fixed forever’¹. To fix the fleeting, to stop what should have lasted no more than an instant: photography has always had to contend with the impossible. Marguerite Bornhauser inherits this impulse, but shifts the gesture. She does not fix what once was; she makes desirable what may never have existed.
Celestial visions, underwater immersions, scenes bathed in scorching sunlight: the artist treats colour as matter, as language. Vibrant to the point of excess, heated to the point of unreality, crossed by stark shadows and lights that spill beyond the frame, these images do not imitate; they entice. The more intense the colour becomes, the further the image moves away from the world it appears to record — and the more it draws us towards it.'
