Gallery

Since its inception, the gallery has hosted nearly 200 exhibitions featuring artists from Brazil, Chile, Spain, Germany, the UK, Japan, Iran, and Portugal, and has participated in numerous art fairs, including ARCO Madrid, ARCO Lisboa, Madridfoto, Photo Basel, Photo London, and Paris Photo, the latter for nine consecutive years.

Founded in 1988 as Galeria Ara, Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea has expanded its focus and strategy over the years. Recently, the gallery has emphasized mediums that prioritize photography, though not exclusively. Since its inception, the gallery has hosted nearly 200 exhibitions featuring artists from Brazil, Chile, Spain, Germany, the UK, Japan, Iran, and Portugal, and has participated in numerous art fairs, including ARCO Madrid, ARCO Lisboa, Madridfoto, Photo Basel, Photo London, and Paris Photo, the latter for nine consecutive years.

The gallery is also a regular publisher of books, collaborating closely with artists and notable publishers such as Dardo in Spain and Stolen Books in Lisbon, while inviting prominent curators and writers to contribute.

Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea has introduced the first solo exhibitions of many significant artists in Portugal. Its represented artists have exhibited at major biennials and institutions, including Bamako Encounters in Mali, the Dakar Biennial, Liverpool Biennial, São Paulo Biennial in Brazil, the Venice Biennale of Architecture in Italy, MAAT, Museu Berardo, Museu Gulbenkian, and Culturgest in Lisbon, Museu de Serralves in Porto, MAM – Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Barbican and National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, among many others.
