Group show curated by David Barro
Located in Lisbon, the Carlos Carvalho gallery was designed by the well-known Aires Mateus team of architects and has four independent exhibition halls which make it possible to combine different forms of contemporary art and maintain an international range of exhibitions.
Managed by Carlos Carvalho, who had previously managed the ARA gallery since 1988, the Carlos Carvalho gallery will focus its attention on exhibiting and promoting contemporary art, paying special attention to publications. The Spanish exhibition organiser David Barro has been invited to organise the inaugural exhibition. He has also been asked to oversee the setting
up of this new project which also relies on the organisers Miguel Amado (curator of the Centre for Visual Arts in Coimbra) and Filipa Oliveira (the independent exhibition organiser) to help draw up the programme for the rooms which have been named Zoom, devoted to the
creative work of young artists, and 20M3, which centres on site-specific creation.
For its entry into the world of exhibitions, and in recognition of the honour of having had the Aires Mateus brothers design the gallery, the architecture itself will be the focus of a special tribute; from a first choice of artists who use it as a theme or motif in their works in the first exhibition, titled Other Architectures, other artists… other alternatives, to the individual exhibitions by the Brazilian artist José Bechara and the Portuguese artists Daniel Blaufuks and Baltazar Torres, which are also closely related. At the same time, under the organisation of both Miguel Amado and Filipa Oliveira, different specific
projects will be presented in the gallery’s other halls christened as Zoom and 20M3.
