For this 33rd edition of Ateliers Internationaux, Laurence Gateau gives carte blanche to Portuguese artists, curated by Miguel Amado.
The link between art, politics and territory is usually at the heart of residencies and exhibitions that present artists in a country other than their own. This type of project can be seen as an instrument of nation-building, as the works produced by the artists and/or exhibited attempt to embody the identity of their country. But a country is an "imagined community," as theorist Benedict Anderson puts it, and so any such project must take into account that national identities are inherently contingent.
The artists' research focuses on representation, that is, on what allows one person to identify with another, establishing (or not) an intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual connection.
