Carla Cabanas

Outdoor 2026

From 1 April to 31 October, the cities of Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Coimbra, Lisbon, Setúbal, Évora, and Faro will host OUTDOOR 2026, an initiative that transforms outdoor advertising billboards into spaces for artistic engagement, promoting free and decentralised access to contemporary art.

OUTDOOR brings art beyond the boundaries of traditional exhibition spaces, immersing it directly into the urban landscape from the north to the south of Portugal. Instead of the conventional museum setting, artworks are presented on a monumental scale (8 × 3 m), occupying billboards and becoming part of the everyday experience of people moving through Portuguese cities. Carla Cabanas, Félix Mula, Inês Botelho, Joana Ramalho, José Pedro Croft, Martinha Maia, and Rodrigo Bettencourt are the artists invited to participate in this edition. With distinct and widely recognised practices within the contemporary art scene, each presents a work created specifically for this format, exploring the unique characteristics of the billboard medium, from its scale and visibility to the conditions of perception shaped by speed, distance, and repetition.

The artworks rotate monthly between the seven cities, ensuring a continuous presence across the country throughout the programme. This new edition further reinforces the project's public, free, and expanded nature, consolidating OUTDOOR as a platform for the dissemination of contemporary art in the public realm.
