Back to Dust

Marguerite Bornhauser

What endures? What returns to dust? Marguerite Bornhauser explores this question via the Verrerie archeological dig (Arles), thanks to a partnership of the Musée Départemental Arles Antique and the Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives. She moves among the ancient vestiges being unearthed, thousands of fragments.

The series Back to Dust is the result of this confrontation with time. The artist plays with scale, projecting a fragment of few centimeters against a background evoking the immensity of a cloud of constellations. The archeological object seems suspended like the time of which it is the witness. Through photographs and montages, videos and installations of archeological fragments, the artist immerses us in color and material: fragments are haloed with a cloud of stars, like a return to the infinite, to dust.
