In her first solo exhibition at Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea, Joana da Conceição is showing a wide field of view on her work.

Presenting a work of art in the cosmos of existing forms, interferes directly with the artistic universe and brings other considerations by introducing meaning or using distinct aesthetic axioms. Besides of being focused on trying to add another language to the world, Joana da Conceição’s work extends to this artistic universe certain principles that situate her work between the figurative and the abstract. This bipolarity is a way to define a secret grammar, a concept created to seize and to represent the real. This link between the observer and reality is shown here as an artifice of consciousness that regulates and builds representation.

Using intuition and improvisation rather than systematization, Joana da Conceição paints what has a reference in perception and reality and can’t be separable from the experience of the author. This sense of the personal experience of the viewer creates an exclusive intelligible space - created and manipulated - by the artist herself. The conflict between two dissimilar poles is used by the artist to expand her own optical unconscious. This creates a field of possibilities where artistic references coexist with symbolic narratives and holistic conceptions.
